Yes. You should always call 811 first to have public utilities marked. After that, hire a private locator to identify any additional lines 811 doesn’t cover, such as sprinkler systems, septic lines, or private electrical lines.
With the right equipment and expertise, almost any pipe size and material can be accurately located. SubScan specializes in detecting a wide range of underground pipes, including PVC, CPVC, ABS, PEX, Copper, Galvanized Steel, Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, Reinforced Concrete Pipe, Terra Cotta Clay, and more. We're able to locate pipes from as small as 1/2" to 24" in diameter and beyond, delivering precise results for any project. In addition to pipes, we also locate various types of underground cables, including Fiber Optic, Coax, Ethernet, and Telephone lines.
We use a wide range equipment and techniques to locate most utilities in various conditions. However, like any technology, there are certain limitations. Saturated soil and high clay content can reduce the effectiveness of ground-penetrating radar (GPR), limiting its ability to detect underground utilities. Damaged pipes that are partially or fully filled with sediment or debris can also be challenging to detect with radar. In noisy environments, using acoustic equipment becomes difficult, as background noise can interfere with the microphones' ability to pick up utility sounds. Additionally, heavily disturbed or uneven ground can make it difficult to maneuver the GPR cart, affecting the accuracy of the scan.
We recommend clearing the area of obstacles and providing access to meters, utility panels, or other relevant points. Let us know about any specific concerns or areas you’d like us to focus on.
Our primary service area covers a 60-mile radius from our headquarters in Pensacola, Florida. However, we’re happy to take on projects outside this area for an additional fee.
