Ascension Sacred Heart – Stormwater Project
SubScan was contracted to locate and mark all underground utilities at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Florida, in preparation for the installation of new stormwater management systems requiring deep excavation. Given the depth at which utilities were expected to be encountered, SubScan deployed a specialized low-frequency GPR antenna to extend radar penetration beyond what standard equipment would allow, ensuring that deep utilities were identified and accounted for before excavation began. Water, sewer, gas, electric, and communication utilities were all located and marked across the site.
Naval Air Station Whiting Field – Landscaping
SubScan was contracted to locate and mark all private underground utilities within a newly constructed parking lot at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Florida, in support of tree installation and removal work planned for the site. The work area included standing water in low-lying areas, steep slopes along the site perimeter, and retaining walls that restricted scanner access in several locations. The subsurface picture proved more complicated than the available drawings suggested, with several utilities shown on the construction plans not found on site, and additional utilities not shown on the drawings discovered and marked in the field. Electric, storm sewer, CATV, and fiber optic utilities were identified across the work area, including a fiber optic duct bank routed through a stormwater pond area that required careful GPR interpretation to locate.
Industrial Facility – Infrastructure Expansion
A general contractor engaged SubScan to locate and mark all underground utilities within a 10,000 square foot work area at a large industrial warehouse facility in Pensacola, Florida, where an active construction project was already underway. The site centered on a complex electrical infrastructure, including a primary three-phase feeder transitioning from overhead distribution into a pad-mounted transformer, with direct-buried duct banks feeding switchgear on site. Recent excavation, disturbed soils, exposed conduits, and material laydown areas created a demanding environment for both GPR and electromagnetic locating throughout the work area. SubScan identified and marked the electrical duct banks, storm piping, and several additional unidentified utilities, working closely with the electrical contractor crew on site to gain the access needed to complete the locate.
Apartment Complex – Fiber Optic Bore Route
SubScan was brought in to locate water and sanitary sewer utilities along a proposed fiber optic directional drilling route at a large multi-building apartment complex in Pensacola, Florida. The approximately 30,000 square foot work area wound through parking lots, sidewalks, and landscaped common areas between more than a dozen residential buildings, where conductive soils, extensive tree root systems, and above-grade obstructions created a genuinely demanding locating environment. SubScan deployed a full suite of tools including GPR, electromagnetic tracing, a pipe camera, a sewer rodder with sonde, and an acoustic pipe locator to work through the site systematically, identifying and marking water service laterals and sanitary sewer laterals building by building, along with storm sewer lines, irrigation, and several unidentified utilities flagged for further investigation.
Private Academy – Athletic Field Renovation
SubScan was brought in to locate and mark all private underground utilities across approximately 100,000 square feet of athletic field at Bayside Academy in Daphne, Alabama, in support of a planned field renovation. The work area encompassed the full interior of the oval running track, including the natural turf field and surrounding sideline areas. Utilities found throughout the site included a stormwater drainage system with multiple catch basins, electrical lines serving scoreboards and stadium lighting conduits, and water service piping. The large open scanning area and the density of sports facility infrastructure running beneath the surface made this a thorough and methodical locating effort across the full footprint of the field.
Commercial Site – Preconstruction Locate
SubScan was subcontracted by a general contractor to locate, mark, and map all underground utilities across an approximately 25,000 square foot vacant lot in Gulf Breeze, Florida, ahead of new commercial construction. The work scope included both the limits of disturbance and a sanitary tie-in corridor extending into an adjacent utility easement. Throughout the site, SubScan identified and marked sanitary sewer, gas, water, telecommunications, street lighting, and conduit infrastructure, with all located utilities documented and compiled into a redlined civil plan drawing and an aerial utility map delivered to the construction team for preconstruction planning.
