GPR Scanning Utility Locating Utility Mapping

Pensacola, Florida

2023

Naval Air Station Pensacola – Building 633

SubScan was called in ahead of a major remodel of a building at Naval Air Station Pensacola to locate and mark all underground utilities within the proposed construction areas. The site presented an unusually difficult locating environment, with a significantly flooded portion of the work area and a subsurface full of undocumented and abandoned utilities that complicated interpretation throughout. Working through both standing water and uncertain utility histories, SubScan systematically identified and marked all relevant underground utilities, giving the project team the information they needed to move forward with confidence.

GPR Scanning Utility Locating

Foley, Alabama

2026

Aerospace Manufacturing Facility

SubScan was brought in by a general contractor to locate and mark private underground utilities across multiple designated work areas at a major aerospace manufacturing facility in Foley, Alabama, ahead of guardrail installation. The site proved exceptionally challenging, with fully reinforced concrete pavement throughout the work areas significantly limiting GPR penetration, and active equipment laydown areas, storage containers, crates, and pallets further restricting scannable surface access. Despite these conditions, SubScan identified and marked utilities consistent with fire service water piping, natural gas lines, primary and secondary electrical feeders, storm piping, and additional buried plastic and metallic lines. All locating was performed using GPR only, per the client’s direction, requiring careful interpretation of radar signatures without the benefit of electromagnetic tracing to confirm utility type or alignment.

GPR Scanning Sewer Rodder Sonde Utility Locating

Panama City, Florida

2025

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport

SubScan was contracted to locate and mark underground utilities across approximately 125,000 square feet of active airport property in Panama City, Florida, spanning the terminal’s north apron and adjacent roadways ahead of a planned construction project. The site presented significant challenges, including conductive soils, widespread subsurface debris, and proximity to an active construction zone, all of which required careful field technique to work through. Using a combination of GPR, electromagnetic tracing, and a sonde-equipped sewer rodder, SubScan identified and marked multiple high- and low-voltage electrical lines, a 25-pair telephone cable traced directly from the terminal’s utility room, fiber optic conduits, and a water main with no tracer wire that was located entirely by GPR. Existing 811 markings on site were independently verified against observed signal paths and found to be in near agreement.

GPR Scanning Utility Locating

Pensacola, Florida

2026

Naval Air Station Pensacola – Building 3860

SubScan was contracted to locate and mark all private underground utilities within a defined work area at a facility on Naval Air Station Pensacola, in support of a chiller replacement project. Despite the compact scope, the site presented a dense and complex utility environment, with highly conductive soils severely limiting GPR depth, mature trees and dense shrubs restricting scanner access, and reinforced concrete obscuring portions of the subsurface picture. Within the work area, SubScan identified and marked secondary and three-phase electrical lines, chiller piping routed from the building through a tree line, a CATV feeder cable, a natural gas line, a probable storm pipe, and several additional unidentified utilities flagged for further investigation prior to excavation.

Spanish Fort, Alabama

2026

Retirement Community – Fiber Optics Install

SubScan was contracted to locate and mark all private underground utilities along a proposed fiber optic conduit route spanning multiple streets throughout a large retirement community in Spanish Fort, Alabama. The scope covered an extensive network of internal roads and common areas across the property, where dense landscaping, wooded areas, and other surface obstructions limited scanner access in numerous locations, and challenging soil conditions further reduced GPR depth penetration throughout. Despite these conditions, SubScan identified and marked water, gas, electric, and irrigation utilities across the full project area, giving the installation contractor a clear and comprehensive picture of the subsurface environment before work began.

2025

USPS – Myrtle Grove Facility Expansion

SubScan was contracted to locate and mark all private underground utilities within a proposed workroom expansion area at a USPS facility in Pensacola, Florida. The approximately 5,000 square foot work area ran along the east face of the existing building, and the site was actively under construction with some excavation already in progress at the time of the locate. Using a combination of GPR and electromagnetic tracing, SubScan identified and marked electric, telephone, coaxial, and irrigation lines within the work area, giving the construction team a clear picture of what was present before work continued.
